Lip Filler Aftercare: A Day-by-Day Guide

The short answer: Expect your lips to look and feel swollen, tender, and sometimes bruised for the first few days after lip filler, with the shape settling over the following weeks. Keep things simple: cold compresses, gentle care, no pressing or massaging unless your injector tells you to, and a call to your injector if you notice unusual pain or pale, dusky skin.

Day 0: the day of your appointment

Swelling and tenderness are normal right away. Use cold compresses as your injector directs, skip strenuous workouts for the rest of the day (the filler-complications consensus advises avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours, PMC5840246), and avoid pressing on your lips.

Days 1–3: peak swelling

Lips are often at their puffiest now, and they can look uneven. That's usually swelling, not your final result. Bruises may appear or darken. Keep lips moisturized and protected from the sun.

Days 4–7: settling in

Swelling usually starts to come down and bruises begin to fade. Lips can feel dry or flaky; gentle hydration helps them feel more comfortable.

Weeks 2–4: your result

Most injectors want to see you back once swelling has settled to check symmetry. Write down questions for that visit.

What to avoid

  • Pressing, massaging, or kissing hard on fresh filler unless your injector instructs otherwise.
  • Heat (saunas, hot yoga) and strenuous exercise right after your appointment.
  • Lip products with irritating ingredients; ask your injector when you can go back to your usual lipstick.

Warning signs

Bruising is common. A blocked blood vessel (vascular occlusion) is rare but urgent. The FDA advises seeking immediate medical attention for unusual pain, vision changes, a white, gray, or blue appearance of skin near the injection site, or any signs of a stroke during or shortly after a filler procedure (FDA: Dermal Fillers). A clinical review notes that, unlike a bruise, skin affected by occlusion may look pale or dusky, feel cool, and come with escalating pain (PMC7028373). If something feels or looks wrong, call your injector. Don't wait it out.

Where Post Love fits

I created FADED, a hemp extract + arnica cream, as a soothing, comforting step for my own patients after injections, and our Mint Lip Balm (with SPF 15) to keep lips hydrated and protected. They're cosmetic comfort products, not a substitute for your injector's instructions. Ask your provider before applying anything to freshly injected skin.

FAQ

How long does lip filler swelling last?

It varies. Swelling is usually most noticeable in the first few days and settles over the following weeks. Ask your injector what to expect for your product.

Can I wear lip balm after lip filler?

Ask your injector when to apply products. Once they give the OK, a gentle balm can help keep lips hydrated.

When should I call my injector after lip filler?

Call right away for unusual or worsening pain, vision changes, skin that looks white, gray, or blue, or any signs of a stroke.
